The new top of the line Leggett & Platt Prodigy is here!  They call it the “Prodigy 2.0 Plus”.  It is exactly like the Prodigy 2.0, which was first introduced about 18 months ago, with one exception.  The new Plus has a lumbar in place of the pillow option.

On the remote control for the Prodigy 2.0, there is a Pillow option.   Now with the new Prodigy 2.0 Plus that option is replaced with a Lumbar option.

This is great option in my opinion!   When you are in the raised position (head high position), your upper body weight gets concentrated to your lower back.  This can cause pain for many people.  With the lumbar option, you can now raise the lower back portion of your mattress to help alleviate that problem.

I personally own the Prodigy 2.0 with the pillow option.  I do not find myself using the pillow option very often. While I love my adjustable base, the pillow option does not do much for me.  I do have to constantly adjust my head position due to the fact that my lower back starts to hurt.

Therefore I think that this new lumbar feature is a fantastic option.

I have the new Prodigy 2.0 Plus set up on my showroom floor, which I have been trying out.  It really seems to work good for me and I love this lumbar feature.

I think that Leggett and Platt got it right this time!  Some people might still opt for the pillow option, especially if they have neck issues.  Either way, now there are two great options that are added to the Leggett and Platt adjustable base beds.

I have had an adjustable bed for a long time now (Almost 10 years).  It is something that has improved my life in a big way.  I would not want to be without it!  Whenever I stay in a hotel, I cannot believe how uncomfortable it is to sit up and watch T.V. without the back of the bed rising up for support.  I watch T.V. every night just before going to sleep.  Sometimes I will use my IPAD or computer while in bed.

During the winter, whenever I have had a cold, raising my head during sleep has helped enormously.

I have developed (probably because I’m officially a Senior Citizen) “ACID REFLUX”.  The main reason for my acid reflux is (lack of exercise, alcohol, eating too much and just simply bad habits).  In other words, I’m a pretty normal guy.  The acid reflux problem does not occur every night but it sometimes will wake me up in the middle of the night.  When it does I have learned to raise the head of my bed about 4 inches.  (It is almost like hitting a switch!  The acid reflux instantly goes away).

Another thing that I sometimes use my adjustable for is an alarm clock to wake me up.  At a certain time it will raise my head and vibrate.

So, what I’m saying is:  I could not live without my adjustable bed at any price.  Which brings me to the reason why most people probably do not own and adjustable bed.  PRICE

I believe that the price is so low that it is a no-brainer to own one.  If you buy a Leggett & Platt adjustable base, you will probably never have to buy another.  They are build to last a lifetime.  If you ever have a problem with one or a part such as the motor wears out, it is easy to repair and the costs is relatively low.  Anything that wears out or breaks could not cost more than about $300.  There is also a local repairman in every area of the United States, when you are dealing with such a large company as Leggett & Platt.

I can’t think of any other item that is used so much, lasts a lifetime and cost so little.

A kingsize SCAPE at Charleston Bedding is only $1600 and queen only $1100.  That is not much money for what you get in return in my opinion.  (You can purchase the Falcon model for only $1200 king and $750 queen).

Yes it’s confusing trying to buy a mattress.  Especially if you don’t know anything about mattresses (which is 99% of the population).  When you search online you get all kinds of crazy info.  Usually put out there by somebody trying to steer you in their direction.  I won’t try to cover everything on this blog post.  What I will cover here is:

How to buy a mattress without getting the sunken middle after a short time

This is the spring system that most mattress stores sell “FOAM ENCASED COIL MATTRESS”

Look at these two photos: What you have here is the old style spring system.

(Not to be confused with the “Pocket coil” mattress)  These are the old style spring systems that all mattress stores sell.  They are the Leggett & Platt spring systems.

• When shopping for a low cost mattress, a good spring mattress will be a better mattress  than a cheap all foam one.
• This is the low cost way to make a spring mattress.  Lot’s of foam and very little steel.   (Steel cost more than foam)
• These low cost mattresses are “Foam Encased”.  All you have to do when shopping for a new mattress is rub your hands along the side and tap the side.  Cheap foam and small amount of steel.  These will sink in the middle in about six months or so.

This is the “Steel reinforced” system that we use at Charleston Bedding and we use “Double cup edge support” (the white foam inserts along the edge)

We use 6 gauge border wire on the edge

We also make this mattress “double sided” flip-able.  This mattress is known to last an average of 15 years compared to the one above which will likely need to be replaced in less than three years.

We also use a denser (better quality) foam padding which last much longer than the low density that you usually find on the mattress above.

Now when you shop for a spring mattress you will know more of what to look for.

When you buy those mattresses that sink in the middle, just remember that if you would have purchased a Charleston Bedding Mattress it would have lasted 5 to 15 years longer.

 

Whenever someone is interested or asks the questions about “How to get better sleep”, I often offer my help.  (I have spent much time learning how to get the best sleep).  We take a look at various things of interest such as:  Better quality mattresses, the correct mattress, pillows, protectors and accessories.  I have spent much time and energy finding the correct products along with general guides to proper or correct sleep.  It’s surprising how many people have never really taken the time to get that type of information.   After all, a third of your life is sleeping and good sleep is essential to health, happiness and even success. Of course adjustable beds are a great improvement over tradition beds.  However there are even more ways to help improve sleep.

This APP allows the user to monitor many things such as:  how much deep sleep they are getting and how much of a dip in heart rate you have.  It also offers suggestions such as “Try not to eat right before bed”.  (That one was a wake up call to me)  (No pun intended).  There are many other things that you can learn from this APP which will help your sleeping patterns.

Latex Mattress

Latex mattresses are a great option if you can’t afford a Temper-pedic.  (Latex is the next best thing).

Latex offers quality, comfort, support, and durability. It’s bouyant and resilient properties offer very promising results when it comes to longevity, not to mention the comfort.

It is common to find latex in hybrid mattresses, pairing latex at the top with either a spring system or a high dense polyurethane foam as the core support of the mattress. No matter what properties you may be looking for in your latex mattress, Charleston Bedding specializes in latex mattresses!

All mattress stores advertise “Low price” mattresses.   Then they start adding gimmicks to make people think they have something special. 

One chain advertises “No deceptive advertising” which is funny to me because many things they do are somewhat deceptive and full of “Bull”.  They advertise and indicate that they are a “Mom & Pop” store while they have over 12 locations in at least three different States.  They do so because they believe that many people want to do business with a “Mom & Pop” type of store.  Then, they advertise…..  “Super low overhead / because we don’t spend much on advertising”.  Meanwhile they spend plenty of money on online advertising.  Then they top everything off by posting reviews they wrote themselves.

Because most people are impulse shoppers, this type of advertising works and I’m sure they sell plenty of mattresses.  That’s because these days people are in a hurry and don’t want to get in more traffic and drive to another store to compare.

Charleston Bedding is a true Mom & Pop store.  Our advertising budget is a few hundred dollars per month.  (We depend on our customers to spread the word about us).  We also cut out the middle men.  At this store you are talking with the actual owner who gets his mattresses directly from the factory.  Therefore we are able to offer the lowest prices in town and better quality.

It’s these types of  gimmicks that makes us choose the slogan “Charleston most trusted mattress store”.  We try to be as honest as possible and are able to offer the best product at the lowest prices.

 

UPDATE to this BLOG:  The online mattress business is a brand new concept.  Therefore the changes are occurring rapidly.  At this point what I have seen with these online stores is an average mattress at best.  When you compare our mattresses that cost less, you will find that our mattresses are much better quality.  

Online advertisements for mattresses have popped up everywhere in the past few years.  This type of sales / advertising is successful because of a few factors.  

• People tend to buy a mattress a lot of times on impulse.  They get up and decide that their mattress was not so comfortable last night and “hey, it’s seems like a good day to buy a mattress”
• People often buy a mattress based on online reviews.  (Reviews work good when buying a refrigerator or lawnmower… So why not mattresses?)
• We are all busy these days and do not have time to get in the car and visit a few stores.  (It’s much easier to just sit on the computer, do some research and buy)

Unfortunately buying a mattress is not the same as some other items.  It’s a pretty big investment and unlike buying a new shirt, you will be wearing that new mattress 8 hours a day, 7 days a week for the next 3-10 years.

Another factor is:  These online reviews are not reliable.  They are often controlled by these new online mattress companies.  I have seen brand new online mattress companies enter the market the first day with 5000 top rated reviews (that they wrote about themselves).

Almost all of these online mattress stores have one thing in common.  They ship lighter weight mattresses to save money.  (Our mattresses are much too heavy to ship).  If you don’t believe me just come in and try to lift one.  The only way to ship a heavy mattress is via common carrier truck line (which is much too expensive).  So what do these new mattress stores do?  (They reduce the weight).   They usually ship by vacuuming the air out.  This combined with low density foam allows it to work.  (Our mattresses are heavy foam or filled with heavy steel and will not compress).

Online mattress stores can only describe what the mattress will feel like.  (Hey, if you don’t like it, we’ll refund your money).  That policy usually works because most people are usually replacing a terrible mattress so that any new mattress is an improvement.

A mattress store however is a much better option!   They will have a showroom and display many different options,  some of which are very similar with the same type of construction. Buying a mattress is like buying a new pair of shoes, some slight variances make a difference.  (A few more inches of foam on top feels better so some people while less is better to others).  It is much better to have options and get the right fit for you).

Price?  (Mattress stores are generally going to beat  online stores when it comes to price).  It does not matter if you are getting the low price or the high price.  When you compare retail to online the retail store will win out.  These online stores are top heavy in advertising and shipping costs.  They simply cannot compete with a store that gets a truckload of mattresses delivered all to the same place while cutting out some middle men.

The bottom line is that you will probably get a better mattress, sleep better and get a better quality mattress for less money at a local store that specializes in mattresses.  It’s worth a few hours of your time to visit a couple of stores if it means that you will be getting better sleep and rest for many years to come.
