Tips on how to sleep better

Posted by charlesadmin

I was recently asked to contribute to an online magazine.  The question posed was “how to sleep better”.

It is a pretty simple answer with regard to most people’s problems.  That’s because most people buy the hot sleeping mattresses.

I know, I owned one for 7 years and slept terrible the entire time.  Mainly because they sleep hot.  (Your body heat is trapped and after 30 minutes, you are sweating and laying on 95 degrees of heat.

The best mattresses are Temper-pedic!  They have figured out how to eliminate the heat problem.  That’s why we offer them.

Pillows also make a big difference.  That why we recommend BEDGEAR pillows.

The best pillows are the top of the line “Bedgear” pillows.

How to avoid hip surgery

Posted by charlesadmin

Last year about 350,000 people had hip surgery in the U.S.A.  It is my opinion that some of these could have been avoided simply by those people sleeping on a more supportive mattress.

Recently I was on vacation for a week.  During that time I slept on a traditional design mattress made by one of the seven  “S” brand names.  As soon I laid on the mattress I knew I would have trouble.  It was simply not supporting my body properly.  All my weight seemed to go straight to my hip.  (Forget even thinking about laying on my back as that would have completely ruined my vacation with my back going out).  While on my side my upper body weight went down to my hip and the weight below my hip traveled up to the hip.  The first night I tried putting a pillow under my hip but that was futile.  I was miserable the whole week and my hip was starting to hurt during the daytime, which it never does otherwise.  It was during that week that I really felt sorry for all the people who purchased this particular type of mattress.  They would have spend over $1500 for this king size set.  Therefore they would naturally think that it is not the mattress but their own aging or whatever.

When you lay on a mattress you want and need support.  It does not have to feel like the floor but it does need to support your weight evenly.  You should be able to lay on your back or side and feel your weight being evenly distributed.  On your side you should feel your body weight along the side of your body and not just your hip.  Then just choose the one that feels best.  (Durability is important at this point and should be considered.  It is at this point that you need to understand the construction of the mattress with regard to the type of foam, density of the foam, type of spring system and gauge of the steel).  Otherwise you could purchase a mattress that initially feels supportive but due to low quality material quickly loses it’s integrity.  This will usually be due to thin gauge steel coils or poor quality polyurethane foam.

How do you know that you are getting good construction and quality material?  You will have to do some homework and comparison shopping.  (If the salesperson does not know the construction of the their mattresses then you should keep moving).

I do not believe in non-supportive mattresses.  Therefore I do not display or offer them.  Everything here is supportive.  Come try them out before you buy.

Online Mattress Information

Posted by charlesadmin

These days I often have people coming in to buy a foundation (box springs) because they just purchased a mattress online.

Online mattress purchasing is getting popular.  Many people see an advertisement on Facebook or somewhere that peaks their interest.  The more they read, the better it sounds.  (These online retailers have some amazing marketing strategies in order to make people think that their mattress is the best).

When these people come in to pick up or purchase their box spring they look around and quickly realize that they might should have come here first.

The fact is that we can sell you a much better mattress and box and include the delivery for less than these online stores.

If it’s not too late for you, make a point to visit our showroom before you buy.

(Those online mattress stores paint a good picture).  They all have a “try and if not satisfied return” policy.  That works good with mattresses because any new mattress will be a great improvement on a current worn out mattress.  Meanwhile these online mattresses are generally pretty light weight or low density polyurethane.  They also don’t offer the option of getting any spring system.  Most of them only sell foam core mattresses.

We can show you all types of mattresses and also explain the differences.  In addition, most of our mattresses are too heavy to ship via UPS or FEDEX.  Our mattresses are solid and will last much longer.

These low density online mattresses will have deep body impressions in no time.  (Our latex mattresses will outlast them by 3 or 4 times over).

Come try ours out before you fall victim to advertising gimmicks.

After I wrote this blog the other day someone sent me some great info in the very popular new mattress brand Purple mattress.  Click here to see the video: Click Here

What is the best way to buy a mattress?

Posted by charlesadmin

The best way to purchase a mattress is by visiting a few mattress stores and trying them out.

Ask about mattress construction and where the mattress is made.

Some mattress stores sell mattresses made in China.  These types of mattresses should be avoided due to questionable material.

Poly foam which is in mattresses is made from oil.  (You do not want oils such as used motor oil in your mattress).

If the retailer does not readily answer questions or does not know, then try another mattress store.

Why purchase the Leggett and Platt adjustable bed?

Posted by charlesadmin

Leggett & Platt was founded in 1883.  They are the largest company in the entire mattress industry.

If you ever need a part for your adjustable bed, L&P will be there to help.  Some of these new companies will likely be here and gone by then.

Here is information on Wikipedia regarding L&P:

Foam mattresses which are made in China

Posted by charlesadmin

When it comes to buying a mattress………….
Where and what your mattress is made of matters

For example: If you are looking for Foam style mattress without the high price, you might look at the “XXX ” brand.  (we are not allowed to show the name here however they are easy to spot by simply smelling the mattress).

However stop and look at those products with regard to what they are made from and where.

These Chinese mattress manufacturers use low quality and questionable foam padding. All you have to do is smell these mattresses to know that something is not right.  (this smell does not go away)

Before you buy a mattress, come by and let me show you what to look for in a good quality mattress that is made from the very best material.

We only use top quality material in our low priced mattresses!

Buying a Mattress Online

Posted by charlesadmin

When you look at any of these online mattress companies there is one thing they don’t mention.  That is the density of their poly foam.   That is because they don’t want you to know!  (The lighter, the better for shipping purposes).

For example “Lull Mattress” has a great queen mattress that sells for $800 including shipping.  You can tell by looking at their online video that the foam is lightweight.  (Our foam mattresses are much heavier).  They cannot be shipped by mail.  We truck everything.  Our mattresses are too dense to be vacuum sealed!

Our foam cores are 2 lb.  (These online guys don’t tell you but from what I’ve seen they use a 1 to 1.5 lb foam core.  Our gel foam is 4 lb. density.  They are not going to use that dense foam.  The very most they would use is 3.5 lb and likely less.

Our  comparable “All Foam” mattress is priced at $500 and is better quality.

Don’t be fooled by these online companies advertising!

Saatva Mattress

Posted by charlesadmin

Recently I have started to see people come in or call regarding the Saatva Mattress.  From talking with these people and checking out this company I now have a pretty clear picture.  This new company is doing a very heavy online marketing campaign.  They are catching people’s attention and then they are saying the right things.  They are doing such a good job that it is taking some effort just to bring people back to reality.

What this new Saatva Mattress company is doing is putting websites out there showing great reviews.  The information on these mattresses make you think they have some new and better mattress invention.

The fact is this:  They are using the Leggett & Platt Pocketed coil 850 spring system.  They then take polyurethane foam and place it on top.  They have a few different density levels of poly that they use.  They ship these to you at a good price.  The most enticing thing they offer is a 90 day trial period.  You can ship it back to them for $99 along with a 15 year warranty.  (Both of which sound pretty good).  When you combine the great reviews, how can you go wrong?

The answer is:  You can’t (They have pretty good product.  The 850 pocketed coil system is good and their poly foam foam is also good).

The only thing is:  We beat them across the board.  We use the 950 pocketed coil system (also made by Leggett & Platt).  The 950 system (according to the manufacturer is better).  L&P claims that it allows more support on the edge and a longer lasting mattress.  (The 950 also costs more because it has more steel).

Where these guys sell 3 different models (We have 5 on the showroom floor)  We not only show the same polyurethane padding that they have, we also show 2 different latex models).  (You can buy our latex version for less money then their poly version).

They have 15 year warranty.  (their warranty offers 3 years and is then prorated.  Ours is 5 years before we prorate and then 10 years.  (But don’t worry so much about the fact that our warranty is 10 years and theirs is 15.  Our mattress will lasts longer because it’s a better quality mattress.  (Their mattress is prorated over 15 years.  That means that in 10 years they would give you a few dollars towards another mattress at best.  That way they get to sell you another mattress).  This mattress is designed to only last about 10 years so their 15 year warranty is somewhat bogus.

Their king set is $1600 (Ours is $1,000)

Their Queen set is $1248 (Ours are $775)

Their Frames costs $99 – $120  (Ours are $40- $50)

You can come and try our mattresses out.

A few other things:  (Our mattresses are not getting abused in a delivery truck) (Unlike a delivery service, we work with you on delivery time that is convenient to you).

In other words………..   There is no such thing as a magic new mattress.  All 500 mattress manufacturers get their components from the same few place.  The best way to buy a mattress is buy from a manufacturer that cares and takes the time to purchase the best components.  That is what we do.

What is a “Factory Direct” Mattress Warehouse?

Posted by charlesadmin

There are over 500 mattress manufacturers in the U.S.A., How many mattress manufacturers or mattress brands can you name?

Most mattress stores get their components from the same few places.  The spring systems they get from Leggett and Platt.  The foam comes from the Carpenter Company.

One of the only companies in the U.S.A. that makes their own foam is Tempur-pedic.  That is why it cost a little more.  They have developed a better process and therefore are the best mattress.

Here is a link to where most mattress manufacturers (regardless of name) get their foam padding:  The Carpenter Company

Here is a link to where most mattress manufacturers get their spring systems from: Leggett & Platt

The foam padding for a new mattress comes in different densities and the quality varies.

There are only about 20 different spring systems that can go in a mattress.  Knowing which one fits you is the best way to buy a new mattress.

What is a Mattress?

Posted by charlesadmin

Webster’s defines a mattress as:

a large pad for supporting the reclining body, used as or on a bed, consisting of a quilted or similarly fastened case, usually of heavy cloth, that contains hair, straw, cotton, foam rubber, etc., or a frame work of metal springs.

(Notice the word “supporting”)

Everyday someone calls me and ask the same question.  “What is your cheapest mattress”?

(These people are trying to shop for a mattress over the phone. They think that if it is called a “mattress” it is a mattress.  They believe that all mattresses are the same.   Whoever gives them the lowest price is going to get their business).  They will then go into that mattress store and ultimately pay more than the price quoted over the phone and at the same time likely not get their best mattress deal.

One of my competitors is selling queen mattress and box sets for only $200.  These don’t have any steel in them.  (steel is expensive)  They are just big pillows.  They do not offer any support.  Therefore these are not mattresses!   However, some people will still buy them because they look like a mattress and the people selling them call them mattresses.  These pillows are the very lowest construction cost possible.  Even the polyurethane foam that they are made from is the cheap stuff.  Most of the overhead in these is in the shipping and even that is low because these pillows don’t weigh much.

Many of my competitors sell “Corsicana” or “Hampton Rhodes” mattresses.  These might not fall under the category of a real mattress either.  The construction on these is so low that in a short time the support feature is a thing of the past, if it ever was there at all.  The box springs are mostly cardboard.

At Charleston Bedding I do not sell anything but real mattresses.  My low priced mattresses contain plenty of steel and offer great support along with good quality foam.  When you compare our $250 queen set price to the $200 queen set down the street, ours are much better buy and will provide years of good sleep.  The $200 pillows my competitor sells will not offer any support and therefore are not really defined as mattresses.  I understand that many of these shoppers are simply trying to just get something to sleep on and the lowest price they can find.  The problem is that these pillows do not really provide enough support in order to be able to sleep.  That should be another element of the definition…. “If you can’t sleep on it, is it really a mattress?”  or “If it looks like a mattress, is it really a mattress”?

There should be a law defining if what you are selling is really a mattress or just called a mattress!

Compare quality and price before you buy and get a real mattress!
